Cancageiro Ao Pôr Do Sol
Cangaceiro ao Pôr do Sol captures a quiet moment beneath the soft burn of the Brazilian sunset. The figure stands still, gazing at the fading light, holding within him the solitude and strength of Brazil’s Northeast, the land where I was born.
The work honours the cangaçeiros nordestinos, the outlaw cowboys of the sertão who roamed the dry backlands of Brazil in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They were both feared and admired, rebels who resisted injustice and fought for survival in a harsh and unforgiving landscape. The cangaçeiros became cultural icons, symbols of freedom and defiance, embodying the spirit of resilience that defines the Northeast.
Clad in leather hats, jackets and boots, they turned necessity into identity. Every piece of leather protected them from the searing sun and the thorny wilderness. Over time, this armour became a mark of pride, strength and belonging.
This artwork reimagines that legacy through reclaimed leather, connecting the ingenuity of the past with today’s commitment to sustainability. The materials, once discarded, are reborn, carrying the same message of endurance that shaped the cangaço. The figure’s gaze into the sunset reflects contemplation and courage, a moment of peace after the struggle of the day.
Cangaceiro ao Pôr do Sol is a portrait of Brazil’s wild heart, proud, raw and eternal, forever standing between survival and hope.
